Raw Milk

Unpasturised raw milk seems to have been hitting the food news in the last couple of weeks.

The 'Farmers Weekly Blog' reports on banning in ,amy states of the sale of 'raw' milk and about the illicit trade surrounding it. Reminiscent of Prohibition? We all know what that did for the increased sales of alcohol! The Times reports similarly about the increase in interest in raw milk both in The States and in this Country. The Daily Mail went further in August, reporting on research that 'Untreated milk cuts children's allergies'.

At the opposite Pole of the milk sector, both The Times and the BBC make mention of a 'leaked government document' suggesting that we should all change to UHT milk to save the planet! Stupid or what? More likely that The Government want us all to drink it so that the milk can come from China – then they can blame someone else for any polution!

It never ceases to amaze me that the French, who seem to view themselves as superior in the culinary arts, use UHT. It accounts for about 95% of all milk sales over there. Ugh!

I can't find anyone in the County actually advertising that they sell unpasturised milk, although it is used in cheeses made in the County – in my opinion, it has a beneficial effect on the taste of the cheese - just try some Sparkenhoe Red Leicester for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

Alernatively, get some of the superb organic milk from Lubcloud Farm Dairy. It's available from many of the County's Farm-shops.

Many thanks Kate – regrettably it’s a bit far away for me.
